Somewhere around June in the midst of working on our new album, Joy Newell, did a cover shoot for us. She had the idea of making a huge paper sail boat, and though we weren’t sure how we’d achieve this, we were set on it.
Justine and I picked up a big roll of paper the day of the shoot and with Joy’s help, we taped rows of paper together to make one huge piece of paper. I was skeptical about our jumbo origami at first, but we just went about it the same way you would with a small piece of paper and it worked! I took a step back to look at the first boat we made and had one of those “wow” moments I often have when working with Joy. The boat looked out-of-place and surreal sitting next to the furniture, and made made me feel excited and giddy, like I was a kid again. I also felt bewildered that we actually made it happen!
I’ve experience this same sort of “magical” and joyful (haha!) feeling when we set up a party scene in the middle of a field with Joy for one of our earlier shoots, and when I took a step back and saw Justine’s bed sitting on the edge of a cliff, while shooting our video for “Crying in My Sleep.” These moments are one of the many reasons I love working with Joy. Her photoshoots are always fun and exciting collaborations, and they also give us an excuse and a reason to try something out-of-the-ordinary and to surprise ourselves by what we can achieve together. What surprises me even more, is that Joy’s photos always come out even more magical than I could ever expect while experiencing the moment.
We worked hard setting up these paper boats in one of Joy’s field “spots” and running around in unprotective clothing through sharp bushes and dried grass. Haha. It was all worth it though! Justine and I decided to use the photos for the cover of our album release in Japan, which will be out on IRMA Records later this year. For the American version we did another shoot with Joy, and you’ll see those ones later on. Until then, you can see more of these paper boat shots up on our website! Also, be sure to check out Joy’s tumblr and her new website!

Some of my greatest work has come from collaboration with the Summer Twins. It is so incredibly rewarding to work with other artists and individuals who aren’t afraid to step out on a limb and try something new. The reason why I enjoy working with Justine and Chelsea so much is due in large part to their commitment to their music and the art that they create. Their vision is clear, their passion is contagious and the best side of who I am as a photographer really has a chance to come out. Make sure to check out their website and their fantastic music here.   :)
